Could it be Cushing’s?
Recognizing the symptoms.

Have you noticed changes in your dog recently?

Maybe they seem hungrier, thirstier, or more tired than usual. Perhaps their body shape or coat has changed. It’s easy to assume these changes are simply part of getting older, but in some cases they may be signs of Cushing’s syndrome.

Every dog is different, but there are some common signs that many owners notice before diagnosis.

Common signs to watch for

You may notice your dog:

  • Emptying the water bowl much faster
  • Drinking more frequently throughout the day
  • Needing the bowl refilled more often

Because they drink more, dogs with Cushing’s usually urinate more.

You might notice:

  • More trips outside
  • Accidents indoors in a previously house-trained dog
  • Waking during the night to go outside

Many dogs with Cushing’s seem constantly hungry.

Owners often notice their dog:

  • Begging for food more than usual
  • Searching for food around the house
  • Stealing food or becoming protective around meals

A common sign of Cushing’s is a rounded belly.

Your dog may look heavier around the stomach while the legs appear thinner.

Dogs with Cushing’s may pant excessively, even when resting or when it isn’t hot.

This is often one of the signs owners notice first.

Some dogs gradually become less active.

You might notice:

  • Shorter walks
  • More sleeping
  • Difficulty jumping or climbing stairs

Cushing’s can also affect the coat and skin, causing:

  • Patchy hair loss
  • Thinning hair
  • Fragile or thin skin
  • Slow hair regrowth

Skin infections may also occur more often.

Will Cushing’s cause a change in my dog’s behaviour?

Some dogs with Cushing’s may show changes in behaviour.

These can include:

  • Seeming more tired or less interested in activities
  • Restlessness at night
  • Increased focus on food or water

Every dog reacts differently, so behaviour changes may vary.

Are the signs of Cushing’s seen with any other diseases?

Yes, there are many other diseases which have similar symptoms and signs to Cushing’s. However, the greater the number of clinical signs associated with Cushing’s you may notice, the greater the chance that Cushing’s may be the cause.

That’s why it’s important to speak with your veterinarian if you notice these changes. Your vet can perform tests to determine the underlying cause.
